My Amazon Story

The Setting

The warehouses where I worked, called DPD5 and later DPD2, were “last-mile” facilities. Every night, a staff of ~80 employees sorted and filtered 10,000s parcels for Amazon delivery vans.

I created this to SIPOC model (acronymic; black boxes) to show the warehouse’s linear process: receive-to-relinquish packages to area homes.

My Amazon Work

(Reverse chronological order.)

Program & Operations Analyst

Applying my background in consulting and business analysis led to creating strategic, collaborative, and scalable value for Amazon.

Challenges:
The warehouse was plagued by low morale, attrition, distrust of business processes, and lack of commitment to the overall warehouse objective – to process on-time, zero-defect orders for delivery.

Actions:
• Observe, assess and define problems.
• Once properly diagnosed, generate creative programming to address root causes.
• 100s of hours of overtime.

Outcomes:
• Documenting analyses.
• Proposing and piloting new continuous improvement programs.
• Staging employee engagement, community engagement and donation campaigns.
• Miscellaneous projects.

Trainer, Learning Adjunct

As one who journals about work, I enjoyed creating business graphics to go along with my entries. This skill and affinity came in handy for training 100s of new-hires and coaching existing employees.

Analysis on Prerequisite Training and Residual Impact

I observed an opportunity for cross-functional awareness and communication. Those Associates (new-hires are called “Day 1s”) who did not–or could not–participate in pre-orientation training modules were essentially left behind and untrained.

In this analysis (at right), I offered a:
• Description.
• Gap Analysis.
• Workflow Diagram, featuring:
• Critical Path for New-Hire Training.
• Highlighted Problem.
• Recommendations, featuring:
• Employee Lifecycle Approach.
• Employee Engagement.
• Cross-Functional Awareness and Actions.
• Ideated resolutions.

COVID-19: An Essential Employee

Luck happens at the right time. It did for me. When 10Ms were sadly losing their jobs to COVID-19, I was brought aboard Amazon’s DPD5 staff.

At the outset of the pandemic, Portland, Oregon area was under curfew.
I had to carry this letter in my car in case I was pulled over.

The scale of the operation and the myriad of figuratively moving parts was fascinating to this MBA (Strategy). My natural work ethic served me well as the physical labor was truly a shock to the system. Once I learned how to manage my own energy, I learned the system.
